This is an important job, but it doesn’t have to be a difficult one. Making sure that you have the right tools to ensure your child’s oral health is the first step in helping him or her have a long future of healthy teeth!

Important Oral Hygiene Tools

The most important oral hygiene tools for your children are:

  1. Toothbrush – The proper toothbrush for your child has a head that easily fits into the child’s mouth and around the back molars as well as a handle that they can comfortably grip.
  2. Dental Floss – Brushing alone is not enough, it’s also important that your child flosses at least once a day as well. Flossing picks are a great way to help younger children floss more easily.
  3. Toothpaste – The American Dental Association has recommended that children over the age of two use fluoride toothpaste to help avoid dental cavities. Use only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and encourage your child to spit the toothpaste out instead of swallowing it.
  4. Water – Water helps to clean the bacteria and food debris from the teeth. It also aids in saliva production. Saliva is the mouth’s natural cleaner, balancing the pH levels in the mouth and keeping tooth enamel strong. Make sure your child is well-hydrated!

Before you purchase dental or oral health products for your child, please look for the American Dental Association’s seal of approval. The seal will be easily seen on the box of any ADA-approved dental products. The ADA has very stringent testing procedures, which ensures dental products are effective.

Please make sure that your child is brushing at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste for two minutes at a time. You should also make sure your child flosses once a day and visits Little Rockies Pediatric Dentistry every 6 months for a dental cleaning and a checkup. To make your child’s appointment, please contact our Parker, Colorado children’s dental office today.
