Dental Sealants

A+ A- A Main Content

Dental sealant is a clear, plastic coating applied to the surface of your child’s teeth in order to prevent tooth decay (link to Tooth Decay page). The sealant, painted on as a liquid, will seep into the grooves of the teeth, forming a clear, protective layer over the enamel of each tooth.

Sealants are especially helpful for kids just learning to brush because they can’t always get into all the grooves of the back teeth. Sealants protect these areas from forming harmful decay.

What is the process of having a sealant applied?

  • The teeth will first be thoroughly cleaned
  • The teeth are then dried and an acid solution is applied to help the sealant bond to the teeth
  • The teeth are rinsed off and dried thoroughly
  • Sealant is then applied, bonding to the tooth before it hardens. A special light is sometimes used to help the sealant harden
