At Little Rockies Pediatric Dentistry we always get asked, “How can I get my child to brush?” We have some great suggestions for parents that we wanted to share with everyone. Some of these use imagination are games and might even get you to brush more. Either way these ideas that we will lay out in a mini blog series will help instill good brushing behaviors that will carry through to adulthood.
Last month we suggested turning brushing into a game for your children to enjoy and for you to also participate in. This month we have a new suggestion.
Offer rewards! Simple right? As long as the reward is not candy right after they brush. We think that is a given. Even adults get rewarded for good work. You can use a start map or a point system, when they reach a certain amount of points or stars reward them with a toy or staying up a little later on the weekends. The reason why this can be helpful is that they understand the importance of brushing but they also get rewarded for doing the right thing. This can carry into adulthood and instill proper brushing behavior for the future. Plus it is a great way for you to enjoy the precious time you have with them while they are young. It can be a growing experience for parents and for the children. So give it a try!
Stay tuned because our next blog will have another great suggestion to make brushing fun for your whole family.
