Common Dental Emergencies & How to Be Prepared for Them

A+ A- A Main Content

Boy with jaw painLife is unpredictable, especially when it comes to kids! While it’s impossible to be prepared for every single thing that could ever go wrong, there are a few ways you can make sure you’re prepared for a few of the most common dental emergencies that could occur.

Common Dental Emergencies

Below are a few common childhood dental emergencies and how you can be more prepared to deal with them:

Fractured Teeth

Kids play rough sometimes, and the teeth can often bear the brunt of wrestling matches or roughhousing gone awry. If a tooth breaks or fractures because of physical activity, find and contain the pieces of the tooth in a cup of milk or your child’s saliva. Once this has been done, contact Little Rockies Pediatric Dentistry as quickly as possible as we may be able to repair the tooth if your child is seen quickly.

Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth

If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, find the tooth and pick it up by the crown only. Avoid touching the roots of the tooth. Just like above, place the tooth in a cup of your child’s saliva or milk. If your child is old enough, try to have him or her hold the tooth in place in the socket. Contact our office immediately to make an emergency appointment.

The best way to prepare for a broken, lost, or fractured tooth is to make sure that your children wear a mouth guard during sports or other physical activities. Mouth guards will protect the teeth and the jaws from damage.

Chronic Toothache

If your child has been complaining of a chronic toothache, there are a few things you can do. Tooth pain may sometimes be caused by food lodged between the teeth. To eliminate this as the source of pain, having your child rinse with warm water and help him or her to floss thoroughly. If this does not relieve the pain, give your child over-the-counter pain reliever as recommended by a pediatrician or pharmacist and make an appointment at our office.

To avoid a toothache, the best thing you can do is make sure your child has a good at-home oral hygiene routine. This should include brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting our office every six months for a cleaning and a checkup.

To make your child’s appointment, please contact Little Rockies Pediatric Dentistry located here in Parker, Colorado.
