Can You Learn About Your Oral Health From Your Tongue?

You may be surprised to learn how overlooked your tongue is. Your tongue does more than just allowing you to taste different flavors. In fact, your tongue can tell a lot about your oral health, which is why your dentist asks you to stick your tongue out during regular dental checkups.

However, if you keep a consistent eye on your tongue and notice any signs of changes, you may be able to spot oral issues before it’s too late.

Some of these telling signs to notice on your tongue include:

  • White Coated Tongue

The natural color of your tongue is supposed to be a shade of pink. If you notice that part or all of your tongue is covered with a white substance, then it could be a sign of oral thrush. Oral thrush is an overgrowth of yeast that occurs inside the oral cavity. On the other hand, it could also be a sign that you aren’t cleaning your tongue correctly every time you brush. However, if that’s not the case, you should be bringing this up with your dentist.

  • Red Tongue

An overly red tongue could be a sign of Kawasaki disease. This disease is related to vitamin deficiency such as B-12 or folic acid, so it can be solved by adding vitamin supplements to your diet. But make sure to consult your dentist instead of self-diagnosing.

  • Sore and Tender Tongue

If you feel that your tongue is overly sensitive in one spot or all over, then it could be pointing toward canker sores or food allergies. However, it isn’t something that you need to worry about instantly. But if it doesn’t go away for a while, then it is time to get a professional consultation.
