Having sensitive teeth can get annoying really quickly, especially if you have an affinity for foods. It prevents you from enjoying cold or hot foods such as ice cream, coffee, and even various spices. And with the cold weather, the symptoms just seem to worsen.

It is estimated that teeth sensitivity affects about 1 in 8 people. If you are one of these people who regularly experience discomfort and pain while consuming cold or hot food, the following tips may help manage the condition.

  • Switch to a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush: You may be surprised to learn that one of the two most common reasons for sensitive teeth is over-enthusiastic brushing. Yes, it is necessary to brush your teeth at least two times a day for at least two minutes, but getting too intense with it actually does more harm than good. You've probably noticed those little labels on toothbrushes that say soft, medium, or hard. If you don't already use a soft-bristled toothbrush, it is time to switch. Medium and hard-bristled toothbrushes can wear down the tooth's protective layer and should only be used if your dentist recommends it. However, it is highly unlikely that a dentist would suggest anything but soft-bristled toothbrushes for sensitive teeth.

  • High-Fluoride Treatments: Fluoride is the most important component of good oral health. This is why it is a common ingredient in toothpaste and mouthwashes. Fluoride can also help harden the tooth enamel, which helps soothe tooth sensitivity. However, you shouldn't self-prescribe a fluoride treatment. Instead, visit a dentist who will provide you with the best treatment after examining your condition.
