We may diligently brush and floss, but how often do we stop to consider the health of our gums? Gingivitis, a common yet often underestimated condition, silently creeps into our mouths, impacting not only our smiles but also our overall well-being.

This mild form of periodontal disease that causes redness, irritation, and inflammation of your gingiva. It’s important to recognize the symptoms of gingivitis early on to prevent it from progressing.

Here are three key symptoms commonly present in gingivitis:

Bleeding Gums

A primary indicator of gingivitis is bleeding gums, which usually happens during activities like flossing or brushing. Healthy gums are not supposed to bleed easily, and the presence of blood might signify inflammation and irritation.

When plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, builds up along the gumline, it can lead to an immune response that causes the gums to become more susceptible to bleeding. If you notice blood when brushing or flossing, it’s essential to pay attention to this symptom and take appropriate action.

Note: If you see blood on your kid’s toothbrush, take them to a children’s dentist immediately.

Swollen and Tender Gums

Gingivitis often manifests as swelling and tenderness in the gums. Healthy gums should have a firm and pink appearance. However, when they are affected by gingivitis, they may appear red, puffy, and more sensitive to touch.

The inflammation is a result of the body’s response to the presence of plaque and bacteria. Swollen gums can also make it uncomfortable to eat or brush your teeth, further exacerbating the issue.

Changes in Gum Color

Healthy gums typically have a pinkish color, but gingivitis can cause them to become red or purplish. The change in color is a visual representation of the increased blood flow and inflammation in the affected area.

Additionally, as gingivitis progresses, the gums may recede, exposing more of the tooth’s surface. This can give the appearance of longer teeth and may be accompanied by sensitivity to cold or hot temperatures.

While these three symptoms are common indicators of gingivitis, it’s essential to note that people might experience variations in symptoms and severity. Additionally, some people with gingivitis may not experience noticeable discomfort, making dental check-ups vital for early detection.
