3 Common Causes Behind Toothaches in Kids

Dealing with toothaches as an adult can be a serious annoyance. But dealing with a kid suffering from a toothache is a whole other story. They get cranky, irritable, and aren’t much help in trying to figure out the issue.

However, understanding the causes behind the toothache can help you manage the situation much better. There are a lot of factors that can contribute to a toothache, but here are some of the most common causes behind it.

  • Tooth Decay: Whether it’s a small dental cavity or serious decay, tooth decay is perhaps the most common cause of tooth pain. The sensitive nerve endings of the tooth lie right beneath the enamel. Therefore, if the outer layer becomes damaged, pain occurs every time the enamel is penetrated.
  • Tooth Abscess: When tooth decay or cavity is left untreated for a while, the decay eventually finds its way to the roots. This causes the root to be infected and results in a bit of throbbing pain. This is why it is necessary to address tooth pain immediately before things get worse.
  • Cracked Tooth Syndrome: Sometimes, a tooth that appears otherwise healthy could have hidden cracks or fractures. This condition is known as “cracked tooth syndrome.” It can result from an improper bite, a traumatic injury to the jaw, or bruxism – a condition that is a result of the grinding and clenching of teeth.

Whatever the issue may be, it is important to take your kid to the dentist at the first sign of a toothache. Even if it isn’t something serious, it is better to be safe than to be sorry.
